Advancing the participation and leadership of women and girls in urban environments vulnerable to climate change
Global Utmaning, UN-Habitat and Her City partners invites you to the virtual panel discussion on: Advancing the participation and leadership of women and girls in urban environments vulnerable to climate change on Wednesday 24 March 2022, 09:00-10:15 EST.
Cities, gender and climate change are inextricably linked. The repercussions of climate change are acutely contributed to and felt by cities. Cities account for 70% of global carbon dioxide emissions. Women, who make up the majority of single headed households in cities, intensely feel the impacts of climate change through infrastructural disruptions and social repercussions within the home and in public space. The recentering of gender in both urban and climate debates is critical, as women bear the brunt of climate change and the gender- differentiated experiences of urban life. Together, these crises aggravate existing vulnerabilities and patterns of discrimination.
The panel will explore how those who bear the brunt of urban climate impacts must have a seat at the table in the fight against it. From local level advocacy and activism to better global representation in arenas such as climate negotiation, gendered leadership can transform gendered outcomes.
